Twitter is currently testing out a new feature with its members called “Who to follow“… So when you log in there is a box on the home page that suggests two users you should follow… Doesn’t this sound familiar??? That’s because this is exactly what Facebook does… The basic purpose of this is to is to gather feedback, so here’s some feedback :

ITs PATHETIC!!!

The fundamental two things are totally wrong i.e “Position and Implementation”

POSITIONING

Normally the location of certain information on a page gives us the insight into what are the priorities of a company… For example when Apple launches something new it makes sure its mentioned right in the center of its Home page to gain popularity… Similarly as we can see this new “Who to Follow” appears above rest of the options like @replies, Direct Messages, Favorites, Retweets, and Search… Which clearly implies that this is more important than the rest of those things… This really makes no sense at all, it should be located well the rss feed option… There should also be an option to toggle into a closed/minimized state…

IMPLEMENTATION

I know this is just the testing phase but somethings should be clearly worked out… Say if i blocked a person, it still suggests them (I recently blocked Preeti Zinta because of her continues self endorsements :-/)… It also suggests people I’d followed for a while and consciously decided to stop following… So suggesting these people is unhelpful at best, irritating at worst…

I really feel that Twitter design team should instead of trying to mimic Facebook start with a new slate to design this option on… It would be tough as they as messing around with an application which is used by billions now… But they should seriously make some needful changes in “Who to follow”…

I am NEVER a fan of Farmville… In fact, based on what I’ve learned, I’m going to do everything in my power to avoid playing it… I know it would eat a lot of my limited time if I get hooked to it, just how Twitter made me an addict these days… My Facebook life is limited only to posting my thoughts, commenting on my friend’s posts and chatting…

I find that FarmVille could have been just another stupid Facebook fad… It would have gone away… Just like when everyone used to pick their favorite five something or other… By far FarmVille is the most pointless of all the pointless Facebook applications AND the most visible thing on my home page…

Its like whenever i log into facebook i recieve a nice message…. “OH NO! MY FRIEND WHO I HAVEN’T SPOKEN TO IN YEARS JUST FOUND A LOST BLACK SHEEP ON THEIR FARM!!!” Now I remember why I haven’t spoken to you in years. :P OR “”YOUR FRIEND HAS BEEN PROMOTED TO PROFESSIONAL PLOWER STATUS!!!” (um, congratulations???

I never realized that farming is so attractive to people… If they can only channel their Farmville addiction to actually working in the farms to produce agricultural products, then we would be assured of food sufficiency… Our country is facing a food crisis and Agriculture sector is now on a decline… So guys grow up instead of becoming virtual agriculturists… :P

BTW guys got a great business idea…… Lets open a Rehab Centre for those addicted to Farmville… :D :P

This is a tutorial explaining how to post to Twitter using command-line in Linux, without needing to even open up your web browser….

First, install the curl package:

sudo apt-get install curl

Next, create a script anywhere in your $PATH, for example tweet.sh inside ~/bin, where ~ is your home directory (make sure ~/bin is included in your $PATH variable, in case echo $PATH doesn’t return it, edit ~/.bashrc and add a line like this: export PATH=/home/USER/bin/:$PATH)…

The script tweet.sh should contain the following:

#!/bin/sh

############EDIT THE FOLLOWING LINES...###########################
user="USERNAME"
pass="PASSWORD"
##################################################################

######################DO NOT EDIT BELOW THIS######################
tweet="${@}"

if [ $(echo "${tweet}" | wc -c) -gt 140 ]; then
    echo "FATAL: The tweet is longer than 140 characters!"
    exit 1
fi

curl -k -u ${user}:${pass} -d status="${tweet}" https://twitter.com/statuses/update.xml >/dev/null 2>&1

if [ "$?" == "0" ]; then
    echo "Successful tweet!"
fi

Replace USERNAME and PASSWORD with your Twitter username and password, and then make the script executable:

chmod 755 ~/bin/tweet.sh

And now test it.. Just use it as :

tweet.sh YOUR MESSAGE

This should be all…

If you don’t want to copy paste the code for tweet.sh then use the following link to download tweet.txt and RENAME it as tweet.sh
