Bing Gets Its Own (Not So Short) URL Shortener (FAIL)!!!

January 18th, 2010

bing logoLooks like Microsoft is also about to start a URL Shortening service…Its called Binged.it

Binged.it is not yet public and is currently available only for internal use… Bing’s employee @fareologist has been using binged.it to shorten URLs when tweeting…

I don’t see Binged.it gaining much traction… As compared to other URL Shortener its basically too long… Google’s shortener, goo.gl, is 5 characters. Facebook’s is 4 characters. Bing’s is 8 characters… Dunno why Microsoft decided to use a name which is longer than its original domain name (Bing.com)…

Now i feel its rightly said that sometimes Microsoft’s stupidity can reach AWESOME heights… ;)

‘Googlle’ opens technology certification ‘school’ in India!!!

January 4th, 2010

Read the title again….. ‘GOOGLLE

The website for the new school, found here, is as bogus as it gets. Not only does it rip off Google’s logo, but it even uses the same favicon, all whilst having dead links to various web pages. According to TechCrunch, Googlle offers two different certifications: the “GCPA – Googlle Certified Professional in Advanced Computing,” and the “GCPE – Googlle Certified Professional in E-Commerce.” The first certification hopes to educate the students in technologies such as Windows and Linux, and the second teaches skills such as proficiency with Photoshop.

Not only that, but there are also, “Modular courses – duration 60 days to 90 days that can enhance your computer skills and offer you “GOOGLLE” certification, no matter what your specific requirement.” The courses are said to take two years to complete, though, worryingly, the main website shows a campus which apparently doesn’t exist. The real question now is whether or not the site will remain operational for much longer; no doubt Google will take action, hopefully sooner rather than later.

Microsoft Patents Sudo!!!

November 12th, 2009

Microsoft-logoThis news is unbelievable and quite confusing….  It appears that Microsoft would like everyone in the world to pay them a toll at least, even if they don’t want to use Microsoft’s software. It has just patented sudo, well its a personalized version of it. Apparently you can patent any command provided it is a “personalized version” with a GUI.

Have a look patent number 7617530.

I think USPTO(United States Patent and Trademark Office) didn’t realize it that Sudo is an integral part of the functioning of GNU/Linux systems, and you use it in Mac OSX also. Lets see if US Supreme Court addresses this topic in their decision on Bilski case.

Detailed story at Groklaw.

Big Companies keen to partner India’s Unique ID project!!!

November 12th, 2009

It appears that IT giants Yahoo, Microsoft and Cisco are keen to help power the technology for India’s Unique Identification project.

What is the Unique ID project?

A project in which every Indian citizen would have one unique identification number(similar to a U.S. social security number) that will identify him/her. It would not just help the government track down individuals as is highlighted by the media, but would make life far easier for citizens as they would not have to submit so many documents each time they want to avail a new service—private or government. The project is headed by Infosys co-chairman Nanden Nilekani.

This task is not small considering the population of India is around 1.2 billion. This would involve very powerful technology to assign these unique ID’s and then to organize/store these ID’s would require a large database. This is why i think Yahoo and Microsoft are keen to help out. Read the rest of this entry »

Ubuntu 9.10 vs. Mac OS X Snow Leopard vs. Windows 7!!!

November 3rd, 2009

Ubuntu - Apple - Windows
Close
Ubuntu - Apple - Windows

Apple let Snow Leopard out of its cage earlier this autumn, and Canonical will release another beast this week: Karmic Koala, otherwise known as the open-source operating system Ubuntu 9.10. This comes on the heels of Microsoft’s launch of Windows 7, a major update of Vista. So, there are a lot of reasons for us to be excited.

Since I use Mac OS X (dual boot with Xubuntu) on Macbook Pro, Ubuntu on my main workstation, and Windows XP on some of our computers used for our family business, I’m looking forward to these consecutive “big-time” updates. However, I still haven’t made up my mind if I’ll immediately upgrade to the new versions. But I did a little research and collected some important information so that I could somehow find out early on if the upgrades will be worth it.

For all of you, I’m going to highlight the main features of Ubuntu 9.10, Mac OS X Snow Leopard, and Windows 7. I will also share my quick observation later on.

Microsoft creates open source foundation!!!

September 21st, 2009

Microsoft has created the non-profit CodePlex Foundation to target increased communication between open source communities and software companies. Citing an under representation of commercial software companies and their employees in open source, the CodePlex Foundation aims to work with particular projects to bridge the gap between open source and commercial worlds. This is an unexpected and interesting move from Redmond. Don’t think that this is completely like other open source foundations that you may be used to though. Read the rest of this entry »

Yahoo and Microsoft Partnership!!!

July 29th, 2009

The Microsoft and Yahoo deal looks really promising to me because the deal maximizes the strengths of each of the two players. Microsoft is essentially going to be providing technology in the form of the Bing search engine and the Ad Center advertising engine. While Yahoo will provide the traffic. Its an 10 year agreement in which Microsoft will license Yahoo’s core search technologies, and Microsoft’s Bing will become the exclusive algorithmic search and paid search platform for Yahoo sites. Under the agreement, Yahoo! would focus on its core business of providing consumers with great experiences with the world’s favorite online destinations and Web products. The companies expect the closing to occur in early 2010. Read the rest of this entry »
