My take on Web 3.0!!!
Before i start talking about Web 3.0, i think its important to view how the web has evolved over the years…
As clear from above, Web 1.0 was the era of Geocities & Hotmail, where all content were readonly and static HTML websites… People preferred navigating the web through link directories of Yahoo! and dmoz…
Web 2.0 on the other hand is about user-generated content and the read-write web… People are consuming as well as contributing information through blogs or sites like Flickr, YouTube, Digg, etc…. The line dividing a consumer and content publisher is increasingly getting blurred in the Web 2.0 era…
While Web 3.0 will be about semantic web (or the meaning of data), personalization (e.g. iGoogle), intelligent search and behavioral advertising among other things… Another unique feature with Web 3.0 is the fact that it will be in three dimension (3D)… Just like the avatars featured in secondlife, Web communities would be in 3D utilizing 3D spaces and personalized characters… I agree with Cisco, that Video is going to be the way of Web 3.0..
Its also based on “intelligent” web applications using things like :
- Natural language processing
- Machine-based learning and reasoning
- Intelligent applications
There is one more feature of Web 3.0…. Application programming interfaces (APIs), protocols, data formats, open-source software platforms and open data.. And to keep this openness of data secure, Web 3.0 would have to use things like :
- Open identity
- Open reputation
- The ability for roaming portable identity and personal data.
Things like Geo-Location are also important to Web 3.0… The ability to track what you do and see it in real time, with the ability to view what other people are talking about and doing in a specific location… Now combine this with video, and you see a much larger Web 3.0 presence…
